We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude. There’s a fingerprint to everyday, and there is always something remarkable and beautiful to be found. This project aims to capture daily moments of gratefulness with hopes that it will help me to cultivate more kindness, generosity and interconnectedness between the tangible and intangible aspects of life. Engaging in a more mindful practice, which supports my ability to see the wonder and opportunity in every moment, contributing to healing the body, mind and spirit - because there’s just so much to be grateful for. So here is to a year of gratitude, I hope you enjoy following along with my journey, and I hope it inspires you to bring more gratitude into your life.
31 - Chasing Rainbows | Who could have ever thought that a minor phenomenon of bending of light as it passes through water droplets can produce such an incredible spectrum of colours. Rainbows are stunning, like shooting stars and Northern lights, they are total magic, Mother Nature style!
30 - Living Presently | The universe is gifting us all the time. It is spontaneous, dynamic and unexpected. My gratitude celebrates in the blessings I am given—the emotions, relationships, connections, experiences and the beauty of the world—as they unfold. It is the now, as life happens, and in this way it completes a wonderful circuit—life sends something my way, I honour it with my undivided presence and energy, and in that awe-filled awareness, I feel whole.
29- The little town of Paia | Filled with vibrant colours, art and beauty everywhere you go there is so much to fall in love with in this cute town.
28 - The Beaches of Maui | The beaches are pristine, vibrant and offer various types of terrain, from white sandy beaches to black lava beaches to red sand beaches. Surrounded by a lush landscape and miles of the prettiest ocean blue there is just so much beauty around every corner!
27 - Vancouver | To me, Vancouver will always have a special place in my heart and will forever be one of my homes. It was the first city away from Halifax that I moved to by myself, and at that time in my life when I was discovering who I was, this magical place by the mountains inspired me to pursue my dreams of becoming a photographer and helped me to grow into the person I am today. Getting to explore Gas Town with loved ones was so much fun, and even though it was an overcast day, there was still plenty of beauty to be found everywhere.
26 - Toronto | Coming from a tiny city, it is always exciting to get to explore a bigger one, especially when it's all decorated for Christmas. Visiting Toronto was so wonderful, all of the city lights and excitement that filled the air was electric, and topping off the day with a live performance of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory was extra sweet.
25 - Christmas | Looking back on all of the Christmas celebrations, my favourite part wasn’t the presents exchanged, or even the delicious food and wine. It was the laughter as we played games, it was the joy as we danced and sang to our favourite Christmas songs, and all of the love we have for each other as a family. I am very thankful for Christmas for bringing people together all over the world to celebrate love and gratitude for one another.
24 - Christmas Eve | After a busy last few weeks, getting to relax at my parent's house with my family while watching classic holiday movies, eating cookies, drinking wine and tea by the Christmas tree was the best gift ever. The coziness, comfort of home and the magical feeling of the night always takes me back to nostalgic memories from when I was little, staying up all night hoping to catch a glimpse of Santa.
23- Point Pleasant Park | Sometimes being in the city can be overwhelming, especially during the holidays, so getting to walk through a gorgeous park and be surrounded by only nature right in the heart of downtown is the perfect cure for too much traffic.
22 - The Library | I could get lost in a book for a day, it is one of my favourite activities to do when I am not trying to accomplish a million things and I have some time to relax. My city's public library houses an impressive collection of books, all kept in one beautiful place that has been photographed and loved by many. Having a community space that invites you to learn, create, and get inspired by is so amazing, especially since it is available to everyone.
21 - Creating a Magazine | Ever since I was little I have always wanted to work for a magazine, but I never imagined that I would get the opportunity to create one myself. These past few weeks of drafting, editing and putting together this design has really shown me, that if you can dream it, you can do it. As soon as you put your mind to something...you're already halfway there!
20 - A Day of Papering | Pressing the snooze button and staying in bed a little bit longer, enjoying tea and a good book throughout the late morning, plus making a trip to Chez Shanna for a manicure, and pedicure is the type of self-indulgent day that I feel really lucky to have had.
19 - The Ferry | I adore getting to take the ferry to cross the harbour over to Halifax from Dartmouth (or vice versa), it's a really pretty commute, offering incredible views of the city. Interesting fact: The Halifax Ferry is the longest running ferry in North America, providing service for more than 250 years (wow)!
18 - Bounty Print | Knowing that my project is in the best hands at this printing company is such a good feeling. Today I got to see the production happen, toured the facility, drooled over the impressive printing machines, and talked with employees about how the whole process works + why they love their job. I couldn't be happier about working with them and seeing this dream become a reality.
17 - Rainy Days | Rain may often be perceived as inconvenient but I really love it, especially the sound. Plus, it contributes to building our water tables, deep below the earth’s surface providing a valuable source for growing and maintaining life. Also, there just happened to be no one out today exploring, so I got the entire waterfront all to myself thanks to the rain.
16 - Slow Mornings | Feeling so grateful and incredibly happy to have gotten the time to slow down and focus only on writing, reading, sipping tea and crafting something beautiful for breakfast. In this early morning space, I honestly feel in love with the moment, and it launched me into one incredibly magical day.
15 - A Dinner Party | It's all in the details, and our host set the perfect atmosphere to be present with friends, indulging in delicious food, plenty of wine, endless laughs and a good vibe that dined with us all night.
14 - Visiting the Ducks | The waddle, their flip-flop flappy webbed feet, friendly and entertaining nature, and indecisive ways are just a few things that make them so cool. Zoey may scare them away pretty quickly, but when she's not paying attention they always come back to say hi and see if I have treats.
13 - My Dog | Today was Zoey's fourth birthday, and because it was a special day she was spoiled with scrambled eggs, a chipotle chicken wrap, whipped cream, steak and of course, a party hat. She is a constant source of love and happiness, and she teaches me important lessons about life, like how to live presently and to enjoy every moment.
12 - Staff Parties | Axe throwing, lots of plaid, a woodsy decor, delicious beer and even better company all made our Christmas staff party at The Timber Lounge so entertaining. It was hilarious how much fun it was to throw large axes at a target and compete against co-workers for the ultimate lumberjack title, I am so lucky to work with such an awesome group of people.
11 - Girl Time | There's nothing like celebrating the end of the year with an educational class from Venus Envy while getting to shop from the comfort of home with friends, delicious snacks, and plenty of wine + fireball.
10 - Queensberry Rules Boxing Studio | This locally grown business is my go-to for getting a serious sweat on. The teachers are the best and I feel so inspired towards improving my strength, agility and coordination in this sweet space.
09 - The Coffee Shop Across the Street | My love for coffee started brewing in first-year university, and I am so thankful for its deliciousness to this day. Lucky for me I have the sweetest cafe across the street from my house with the best-baked goodies, staff and atmosphere in Dartmouth.
08 - Shubie Park | Parks are places to see wildlife and experience nature, breathe in the fresh air and fall in love with all of natural and wholesomeness around us. They are so important because they pass on the benefits of conservation and stewardship to all of the visitors and show why cultivating an appreciation for nature is so important, not only for us but for future generation too.
07 - Snowy Evening Walks | Enjoying the scene of my surroundings after a fresh snowfall, wrapped up in layers of warmth with the anticipation of hot chocolate when I get home.
06 - Chasing Sunsets | The golden hour before it sets, the way the light dances on all of its surroundings kissing the world goodnight, and the experiences of awe that brings me into the present moment will have me chasing the light forever.
05 - Photographing Homes | Like snowflakes, every home is completely unique, and getting to capture the best attributes of someones place with my own creative expression allows me to make art everywhere, and for that, I am totally grateful.
04 - New & Old Christmas Traditions | From the classic movies, to baking cookies, decorating a tree and waking up on Christmas morning, I am so thankful for all of the cozy vibes this season brings.
